Schnee - Snow!

Es soll noch mehr Schnee geben...
There is more snow int he forecast...

The neighbour came by with her little boy to pick up Benjamin. There was a digger ripping down a couple of old houses.

Snow - Es hat geschneit!

This was at 7 o'clock this morning.
Andrej had to go out and free the cars. Andrej musste die Autos befreien.

The back of our house. Hinter unserem Haus.

Neighbourhood. Nachbarschaft.

Rusty likes it! Rusty freut sich!

Paint!!

Sonja Bee, 3 1/2 Monate

I don't like pink. But unfortunately for me, she looks pretty good in pink...what can I do. She gets lots of cute clothes from people who love her, mostly in pink, so that is what she wears. The pink Adidas pants she's wearing here were Maia's, back in the days when Mike worked for Adidas. And the blue eyes are here to stay, I think!

More basement - Renovation

NEW DOORS! I'm standing in the office looking toward the bedroom.

Yes there is another door. Here I'm standing in the bedroom looking at the office door.

The floor in the office looked something like this - uneven, choppy, cement:

Scott, our mason (who did the front porch), came and leveled it. Now it looks like this:

We decided on carpeting in these two rooms. Decision to be made asap.

Snow!

It snowed. Imagine, in January and February, in Canada.

Even Sonja Bee had to participate!

Daddy's snowman!

Friends!

Here we are at IKEA having a nice breakfast! Elise and Nikolas came to meet with Benjamin and Sonja B.

Priming - malen

Standing in what will be our office, with a new big closet to the right. Looking toward the tiny bedroom (where the window is). The window leads to our backyard. This part is all primed.

Hier steh ich im Büro. Schrank rechts.

Standing in the same spot in the office, with view of the closet again, and the little window leading to the neighbour's driveway.

Hier I'm standing at the bottom of the steps which lead down here. The little window leads to our driveway. The door leads to a closet which is underneath our still unfinished steps that lead to our front door. The steps outside are useable but not complete with the decorative stone. That was halted because of weather.

Hier I'm standing in the same spot again looking more to the left. Andrej is inside the huge linen closet, painting. All our wireless, cable and phone wires are located in this closet. That part of the room is huge, which isn't visible from here, and will be where the TV is located.

This is the view of the steps leading upstairs. The side door leads to the driveway, and another four steps lead upstairs into the main part of the house.

Sonja's lovely bald spot!

The Pink Tower - Montessori

This is the pink tower, a Montessori material.

Benjamin has started going to this tower every day, on his own, to play with it.

First, you take a mat out of the basket and unroll it...

...then you get each individual piece from the shelf and bring it over to your mat.

Sometimes an older child is doing something different, so the pink blocks get abandoned...but not for long! His teacher assures me that the pink tower is like a comfort zone for Benjamin.

What is the Pink Tower?

(source: http://www.montessori-namta.org/NAMTA/geninfo/concepts2.html)

The material known as the pink tower is made up of ten pink cubes of varying sizes. The preschool-aged child constructs a tower with the largest cube on the bottom and the smallest on top. This material isolates the concept of size. The cubes are all the same color and texture; the only difference is their size. Other materials isolate different concepts: color tablets for color, geometry materials for form, and so on.

The materials are self-correcting. When a piece does not fit or is left over, the child easily perceives the error. There is no need for adult "correction." The child is able to solve problems independently, building self-confidence, analytical thinking, and the satisfaction that comes from accomplishment.

As the child's exploration continues, the materials interrelate and build upon each other. For example, various relationships can be explored between the pink tower and the broad stair, which are based on matching precise dimensions. Later, in the elementary years, new aspects of some of the materials unfold. When studying volume, for instance, the child may return to the pink tower and discover that its cubes progress incrementally from one cubic centimeter to one cubic decimeter.
